Thailand receives more than 35 million international visitors a year, and a rising share of them are Scandinavians, Americans, Brits, and Germans who have already switched from cigarettes to nicotine pouches at home. For that group, a Thailand trip used to mean one of two unpleasant choices: pack enough tins to last the entire holiday and risk customs hassle, or go cold turkey for the first few days.

Neither is necessary in 2026. Nicotine pouches are fully legal in Thailand, widely available at licensed retailers, and sold at competitive prices. This guide covers everything: what's legal, what's banned, what to pack, and where to restock once you land.

Pouches vs vapes: the critical distinction

The single most important thing to understand before travelling to Thailand with any nicotine product: vapes are banned — pouches are not. These are two completely different legal categories and they are treated very differently by Thai customs officers and police.

Warning for vapers: E-cigarettes, vape pens, disposables, pod systems, and e-liquid are all illegal to import, possess, sell, or use in Thailand. Penalties include fines up to 500,000 THB and up to 10 years imprisonment for importation. Do not bring these under any circumstance. Enforcement at major airports increased significantly in 2024–2025 following high-profile tourist prosecutions.

Nicotine pouches, by contrast, are fully legal. They sit in the same regulatory category as chewing gum or breath mints from a customs perspective. They're sold openly in licensed retail stores. You can pack them in your luggage, declare them if asked, and continue about your trip.

Why the difference? Thailand banned e-cigarettes in 2014 under specific Ministry of Commerce notifications. Those notifications never mentioned oral nicotine pouches because pouches weren't a meaningful commercial category in 2014. The legal framework has not been updated since — pouches remain in the unregulated gap, bought and sold legally under a standard Type 2 tobacco retail license (100 THB per year).

Yes, in every sense that matters for a tourist:

  • Possession: Legal. You can carry pouches on your person, in your hotel, at the airport, at the beach, and on public transport.
  • Use: Legal. You can use pouches in public, in restaurants, in hotels, and in your rental condo.
  • Purchase: Legal. Buy openly at licensed retailers like Nicohub's flagship stores and the partner network.
  • Import: Legal for personal use. You can bring pouches into Thailand without declaring them, though declaring if asked is never a problem.
  • Age: You must be 20 or older to purchase nicotine products in Thailand.

Commercial import or resale requires proper licensing and is not relevant for a tourist carrying a few tins for personal use.

Bringing pouches into Thailand: what to know

Packing nicotine pouches for Thailand is simpler than packing liquid sunscreen. Key points:

1

Checked luggage or carry-on — both fine

Pouches contain no liquid, no battery, no pressurised gas. They pass security screening without issue in any country. Most frequent travellers pack them in carry-on for access during the flight.

2

Keep them in original packaging

Don't decant into a pill bottle or Ziploc bag. Original tins with visible brand labelling (VELO, ZYN, KILLA, PABLO, etc.) help customs officers identify the product immediately. Loose unmarked pouches invite unnecessary questions.

3

No formal quantity limit for personal use

Thailand does not publish a specific quantity limit for personal import of nicotine pouches. As a practical rule, keep under 10 tins and you won't attract any attention.

4

No medical note or permit needed

Some travel forums suggest bringing a doctor's note as "justification" for nicotine pouches. This is completely unnecessary and makes the interaction more complicated than it needs to be. Pouches are a consumer product, not a controlled medicine. Just pack and go.

How much should you pack?

Because pouches are legal and widely available once you land, there's no need to bring enough for your entire trip. Rough calculations by usage level:

  • Light user (5–10 pouches/day): One can = 2 to 4 days.
  • Regular user (10–15 pouches/day): One can = 1.5 to 2 days.
  • Heavy user (20+ pouches/day): One can per day or more.

The sweet spot: bring 2 or 3 tins for the first 2–3 days, then visit a Nicohub flagship or partner location within the first week. This covers the jet-lag recovery period, avoids packing bulk, and gives you access to the full Thai range — which is larger than you might expect.

Travelling to a remote province or island with limited retail infrastructure? Scale up to 5 or 6 tins. Staying in Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, or Chiang Mai? Two to three tins is plenty.

Customs and airport tips

Thai customs officers at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK), Phuket (HKT), and Chiang Mai (CNX) are experienced with international travellers and generally don't stop passengers carrying small quantities of consumer products.

If you're asked what they are

Say "nicotine pouches" or "Swedish snus". Do not say "tobacco product" (triggers duty questions) or "vape replacement" (vape will cause confusion). "Nicotine" is recognised, legal, and causes zero alarm.

If an officer looks suspicious

Offer to open a tin and show them. The small round pouches inside visibly contain no liquid and no battery. Most queries resolve in under 30 seconds — many officers have simply never seen pouches before and want to verify what's inside.

Don't mix with vape equipment

If by any chance you also have a forgotten vape, pod, or coil in your bag, dispose of it at the departure airport before you fly. Pouches by themselves are fine. Pouches alongside any vape component creates a different situation entirely.

Don't carry on behalf of strangers

Don't carry packages or sealed items for someone else, even if told they're "just nicotine pouches." Unknown sealed packages from strangers are a common smuggling setup. You need to be able to explain — and open — everything you're carrying.

Buying nicotine pouches in Thailand

Once you're here, buying is straightforward. There are two reliable tiers of retailer, plus a third to be aware of:

🏪
Tier 1 · Highest selection
Nicohub Flag Stores

Two dedicated flagship locations in Bangkok — Nicohub Silom and Nicohub Sukhumvit Soi 31 — plus a flag store in Pattaya. These carry the full catalogue and the widest range of SKUs. Trained staff, fresh stock rotated regularly, and published prices.

Tier 2 · Same quality, slightly fewer SKUs
Verified Nicohub Partners (200+)

Over 200 retail partners across Thailand, verified by the Nicohub team for stock authenticity, accurate pricing, and real opening hours. Partners typically carry 5–15 of the top-selling SKUs rather than the full catalogue. Find your nearest via the store locator.

⚠️
Tier 3 · Avoid if possible
Unverified Small Shops

Some convenience stores and corner businesses sell pouches opportunistically without being part of the Nicohub network. Risks include old stock, grey-market imports, and in rare cases counterfeits. If the price is dramatically lower — or much higher — than Nicohub pricing, something is wrong.

Storing pouches in Thailand's climate

Thailand's heat and humidity are the biggest threat to pouch freshness. Follow these rules:

  • Keep unopened cans in the fridge. Extends shelf life by 6 months or more.
  • Don't freeze them. The plant fibres inside can crystallise and lose their structure.
  • Keep opened cans sealed tight. The lid is your main defence against humidity drying out the filler.
  • Never leave cans in a hot car. Thai car interiors regularly hit 60–70°C during the day.
  • Don't leave cans in direct sun at the beach. Pack them in an insulated bag or keep them in the shade.

Etiquette and practical tips

Use freely in public, but dispose properly

Nobody minds you having a pouch in your lip at a bar, restaurant, taxi, or on the beach. What people do mind is used pouches dropped on the ground, in plant pots, or in toilets. Use the bin or the lid's waste compartment.

Be discreet in temples and royal locations

Out of respect, don't use pouches inside temple grounds or royal palaces (the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun, etc.). This isn't a legal requirement, but it's considered disrespectful. Step outside the complex first.

Use Grab to reach the nearest store

For Bangkok, the easiest way to reach a Nicohub flagship is Grab. Enter Nicohub Silom or Nicohub Sukhumvit Soi 31 as the destination. Journey from central tourist areas is typically 10–25 minutes, 100–250 THB.

Leaving Thailand: what to do with leftover pouches

When your trip ends, you can take unfinished tins home. Destination-specific notes:

  • EU, UK, Sweden, Norway: Legal for personal use. Check country-specific quantity limits.
  • US: Legal in most states. Some state-level restrictions on flavoured nicotine products exist.
  • Australia: Nicotine pouches without prescription are illegal to import. Don't bring them home.
  • Canada: Legal but regulated. Small personal quantities generally pass without issue.
  • Japan, Singapore, Malaysia: Varies — research your destination before packing.

Always verify before you fly home. Nicotine regulations change. Check the current rules for your destination country before packing any pouches in your return luggage — particularly if you are transiting through a third country on the way home.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring nicotine pouches into Thailand?

Yes. Nicotine pouches are legal to bring into Thailand for personal use. Keep them in original packaging and you'll pass customs without issue. The critical rule: avoid packing them near vape equipment, which is banned.

What happens if Thai customs asks about my pouches?

Say "nicotine pouches, for personal use" and offer to open a tin if asked. Most queries resolve in under 30 seconds. Unlike vape equipment, pouches are not on any restriction list.

How many tins can I bring?

There is no formal personal-use limit. As a practical rule, keep under 10 tins and you won't attract attention. If you're bringing more than 20 tins, consider splitting across luggage or reducing quantity — large volumes can look commercial and invite extra questions.

Can I vape in Thailand instead?

No. E-cigarettes and vaping equipment are fully illegal to import, possess, sell, or use in Thailand. Penalties include fines up to 500,000 THB and up to 10 years imprisonment for importation. If you currently vape, switch to pouches for the trip.

Is it legal to use a nicotine pouch in bars, restaurants and hotels?

Yes. Pouches produce no smoke, no vapour, and no smell, so Thailand's smoking bans do not apply. You can use them in bars, restaurants, taxis, and hotel rooms without issue.

Where can I buy nicotine pouches in Bangkok?
